West Khasi Hills District was carved out of the erstwhile Khasi Hills District and officially formed on 28 October 1976, with Nongstoin as its headquarters. In 2026, the district marks its 50th anniversary (Golden Jubilee), celebrated through a month-long series of events culminating on 28 October 2026.
The Golden Jubilee celebrations were inaugurated on 28 September 2026 in Nongstoin, with the launch of an official logo and theme song, and a range of community activities including sports, cultural programmes, and departmental initiatives.
From its formation in 1976 to becoming one of Meghalaya’s largest and most significant districts, West Khasi Hills has played a central role in the state’s administrative and cultural landscape. [29][33]

The Golden Jubilee logo and theme song (composed by Josephas Thongni) were launched during the inaugural ceremony on 28 September 2026.
