The duties and functions of the Town Committee
is normally to look after the affairs of the Town area, e.g., arrangement
of parking places for all types of vehicles, eviction of hawkers from
unauthorized areas/places like government lands, parking places, P.W.D.,
roadsides, footpaths and things which are considering public nuisance.
Initiating proposals for constructions of footpaths, drains and improvement
of the crowded/congested and slum areas of the main town. This is usually
in coordination with the District Urban Affairs, Nongstoin and some
concern departments.
The committee is also entrusted to check the unlawful
construction of r/builings and encroachment on village footpaths, government
land and PWD roadsides and then issue necessary building permission
and No-Objection-Certificate for electrification and private water connection
after due recommendation from the local heads.
The Committee can select some genuine and specific schemes
to be implemented by the Committee and ask the Assistant Engineer, D.U.A,
Nongstoin, to prepare plans and estimates not exceeding Rs. 2,00,000/-
(Rupees two lakhs) and now extended up to Rs. 4,00,000/- (Rupees Four
lakhs) per annum, and the same is to be forwarded to the Director urban
Affairs, Shillong for sanction/allotment of fund.
Regarding other developmental works, the Committee use
to ask other line departments and also discussed and decided in the
Town Committee meeting to be taken up on genuine needs.
The Committee is responsible for the disposal of waste
products within the Town, where at present no dumping sites owned by
the Committee.
Arrangement of place for slaughtering of animals (cow, pigs, etc) –
presently 1 (one) slaughterhouse has been constructed in the site owned
by the Committee donated by the Syiem of Nongstoin but the site needs
to be improved and approach road also needs to be constructed for the
convenience of the butchers.
